Edgar Allan Poe Essay Essays

Edgar Allan Poe Essay Essays Edgar Allan Poe Essay Essay Edgar Allan Poe Essay Essay The American Face of Edgar Poe (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1995). Now at this point of time, it was said that Poe died of congestion of the brain. However, his actual cause of death was the subject of endless speculation. There are some experts that believe alcoholism was the cause of his death. However, others came up with alternative theories for example, Rabies, Epilepsy, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning are Just some of the few conditions thought to have led to the writers death. Now shortly after his passing, Edgar Allan Poes reputation was very badly damaged by his literary adversary whose name was Rufus Griswold. He was sharply criticized by Poe, took Ellis 3 his revenge in his obituary of Poe, portraying the gifted yet troubled writer as a mentally deranged drunk and a womanizer. He also penned the first biography of Poe, which helped cement some of these misconceptions in the publics minds. (The Works of the Late Edgar Allan Poe: With Notices of his Life and Genius,2013) Well I think that with his biography they wanted to explain Edgar Allan Poes life in detail as he did many things in life besides writing. He did go to college however; he was unable to finish due to his lack of money and the gambling debts that he had accumulated, he also had a family member get him into West Point for the military. However, he ended up leaving the military because it was not for him. He then devoted all of his time to is writing but there were people that thought that he could not make it and he was criticized by other authors and poets. Well my experience with reading his material gave be a better understanding of how his life was and the obstacles he had to overcome for example his drinking problem, growing up poor having to leave college because he had no money, his gambling, and the death of his wife. His reading also gave a good insight on what it takes to be successful and not giving up even when others tell you that you cannot make it. Well I think this text should be read, because he is a good writer and he has done various works as stated above. This would be a good author to be discussed in colleges and schools because of his diverse writing style and there is always something that he wrote that could interest someone his writing are not tailored to one specific group of people. They are very diverse and can interest a number of people from various ages. When I read The Raven I liked it somewhat but however, I cannot get into these types of novels because they really do not interest me. It was hard for me to get interested in this Even though I dont really like poetry I think it is a good teaching tool because t does show people how to be good writers and what they should include like images descriptions, their tone even though when you reads some poems and stories it is very difficult to know the tone of the writer. I think what ruined this for me is not for me to sit and read something that I am not interested in I think it takes the fun out of reading when you are not interested in material. In order to be able to read something it must interest that person that is reading it. If they have no interest then reading becomes boring and drawn out. I think if I had chosen something else that he wrote maybe the outcome would have been different.

10 Tips for Getting Along With Your College Roommate

10 Tips for Getting Along With Your College Roommate You may have grown up living with lots of siblings, or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. While having a roommate inevitably has its challenges, it can also be a great part of your college experience. Follow these ten tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year (or even years!). 1. Be Clear About Your Expectations From the Beginning Do you know in advance that you hate it when someone hits the snooze button fifteen times every morning? That youre a neat freak? That you need ten minutes to yourself before talking to anyone after you wake up? Let your roommate know as soon as you can about your little quirks and preferences. Its not fair to expect him or her to pick up on them right away, and communicating what you need is one of the best ways to eliminate problems before they become problems. 2. Address Problems When They're Little Is your roommate always forgetting her stuff for the shower, and taking yours? Are your clothes being borrowed faster than you can wash them? Addressing things that bug you while theyre still little can help your roommate be aware of something she may not otherwise know. And addressing little things is much easier than addressing them after theyve become big. 3. Respect Your Roommate's Stuff This may seem simple, but its probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflict. Dont think hell mind if you borrow his cleats for a quick soccer game? For all you know, you just stepped over an uncrossable line. Dont borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first. 4. Be Mindful of Who You Bring Into Your Room- and How Often You may love having your study group into your room. But your roommate may not. Be mindful of how often you bring people over. If your roommate studies best in the quiet, and you study best in a group, can you alternate who hits the library and who gets the room? 5. Lock the Door and Windows This may seem like it has nothing to do with  roommate relationships, but how would you feel if your roommates laptop got stolen during the ten seconds it took you to run down the hall? Or vice versa? Locking your door and windows is a critical part of keeping safe on campus. 6. Be Friendly, Without Expecting to Be Best Friends Dont go into your roommate relationship thinking that you are going to be best friends for the time youre at school. It may happen, but expecting it sets both of you up for trouble. You should be friendly with your roommate but also make sure you have your own social circles. 7. Be Open to New Things Your roommate may be from someplace youve never heard of. They may have a religion or lifestyle that is completely different from your own. Be open to new ideas and experiences, especially as it to relates to what your roommate brings into your life. Thats why you went to college in the first place, right?! 8. Stay Open to Change You should expect to learn and grown and change during your time at school. And the same should happen to your roommate, if all goes well. As the semester progresses, realize things will change for both of you. Be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly come up, setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment 9. Address Problems When They're Big, Too You may not have been totally honest with tip #2, or you may suddenly find yourself with a roommate who goes wild after being shy and quiet the first two months. Either way, if something gets to be a big problem quickly, deal with it as soon as you can. 10. If Nothing Else, Follow the Golden Rule Treat your roommate like youd like to be treated. No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect. Dont think you and your roommate are going to be able to work it out? It can be easier than you think to address your problems and, ideally, find a solution that works for both of you.

Financial crisis and the dilemma of business ethics by focusing on the Essay

Financial crisis and the dilemma of business ethics by focusing on the element of trust - Essay Example Full Lang and Jagtiani (295-316 indicate that the desire to avoid a financial crisis is one reason that the economists tolerated ongoing financial crisis for years and continues to play its role by shifting the level trust of individuals. Meanwhile, financial crisis was caused by increase in government purchases and the massive mobilization of the resource caused by lack of corporate governance. Failure of corporate governance caused many banking institutions to lack transparency and accountability that caused the turndown of the economy. As result, the risk management and financial firms were functioning without any regulatory mechanism due to the failure of corporate governance responsibility. Prassas (40-44) claims that the reason for the crisis was caused by the distortions and incentives caused by the poor regulatory mechanism that affected the individual mortgage because banks changed the balance sheet mortgage securitization. Reinhart and Rogoff (1676-1706) claim that the investors and mortgage rating agencies failed to accurately price the risk attached with the mortgage products that resulted in the financial crisis. The reason for the current financial crisis is as result of prolonged credit expansion in most of countries that caused the increase in cyclical fluctuations in the economy market. In additional, the extravagant lending of banks that allowed greedy borrowers to purchase overpriced properties that they could not afford was one reason for financial crisis. Therefore, when these borrowers were unable to pay back their mortgage, the delinquency and foreclosures rates would not be avoided by lenders. As result, this affected the mortgage market that lead to the failure of fundamental organizations like Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. According to Akay (260-273), this demand led to effect on the various metropolitan places that violated the microeconomic

Mouring in the Victorian Era Essay -- Victorian Era

Mouring in the Victorian Era The actions of Victorians upon a death is a intricate web of rituals and etiquette. In Vanity Fair, William Thackeray gives modern readers a brief glimpse into deep mourning through Amelia Sedley-Osborne. The idea of deep mourning was introduced by Queen Victoria upon the death of her husband, King Albert, who died of typhoid in 1861. At that time and for forty years after(the time of her death), the Queen mourned the loss of her beloved husband. She commanded her court to dress in mourning with her for the first three years post-mortem. Because of the Queen's extreme actions, the Victorians elected to mimic her ethics. After her death, the world came out of mourning and began to change fashion, which began the Edwardian Period. Death Death was a commonplace occurrence in the Victorian Age. "Three of every twenty babies died before their first birthday, and those who survived infancy had a life expectancy of only forty-two years" (Douglas) Death would take place most often in the home. When a death occurs, the entire house stops and takes up deep mourning. Windows are closed. Clocks are stopped. Mirrors were covered. Mirrors were covered because it was believed that a mirror, or reflective surface, could because trapped in it. Bodies would be stored in homes until they were buried. Poor families in their small houses would have to kept the dead in the same quarters as the living until the time of the funeral had arrived. Even children were not sheltered from the deaths around them. They were instructed at all ages on the meaning of death and its rituals. As the Industrial Revolution developed, Middle Class and proper etiquette were defined.
